Golden Wedding Anniversary cake
A rather unusual colour scheme for a Golden wedding anniversary cake. I was commissioned to copy the flowers from the bride's wedding bouquet, 50 years ago. To add a touch of gold, a length of gold coloured ribbon was fixed around the cake and small lengths were wired up and added to the sugar flower spray. I painted the greeting with gold lustre dust mixed with a little water. The flowers and leaves are made with a hard setting paste made with sugar but they are not edible because they have wires attached to them. The sugar flower spray can be lifted out of the cake and kept for many years as a momento of the celebration.
This particular cake is 10 inches (about 25 cm) square and is a two layer sponge cake filled with raspberry jam and buttercream. The wired sugar flower spray contains 7 roses, 10 sprays of lily of the valley, 12 star shaped flowers, 8 ivy leaves, 8 rose leaves and 12 small lengths of gold ribbon.
